Today I was at a course to become a weekend volunteer at a 4H farm in Stockholm. I grew up very close to the farm so I have been there a lot when I was a kid and it’s such a wonderful atmosphere.
4H’s mission is to spread knowledge about endangered Swedish farm animals, how to create self sufficiency, how nature’s cycles work and to encourage children and young people to develop into engaged and responsible people with respect for the outside world. The four H stands for head, heart, hands, and health and the motto is learn by doing. The farm is open to the public and has a lot of visitors!
I see this as a great opportunity to learn about and handle all the farm animals in a safe setting so that getting our own animals in the future wont be such a enormous step. Since I love animals it is going to be really fun to be able to work with and socialize with lots of different types of animals – cows, horses, goats, sheep, hens, pigs and rabbits. There are also lots of opprtunities to learn if you are interested in a particular species which I think is fun.
The farm relies on donantions and volonteer work to function so I am happy to support the whole concept of engaging kids and youths in animals and homesteading. I will volunteer one day per weekend about every fifth weekend so I’ll see when my first day will be.
